St Margaret's College opened on 8th February 1910 at the location of 28 Armagh Street, Christchurch, New Zealand. On the first day, there were 83 girls enrolled at St Margaret's College. The school was founded by Bishop Julius, who in 1907 had the idea that people were keen for their daughters to have an education based on religious values.
28 Armagh Street was already a functioning school set up by Johanne Lohse and Annette Bowen. Bishop Julius enquired about purchasing land for a school and Annette Bowen gave the property of Armagh Street to the Anglican Diocesan of Christchurch. Julius ordered the Kilburn sisters to set up and run the school for the first few years. The Kilburn sister had already set up other schools such as St. Hilda's in Dunedin.
